The first Biennial of the Latin American Print in San Juan, Puerto Rico openend in January, 1970.

Luigi Marrozzini conceived the project and spearheaded it together with William S. Lieberman and Riva Castleman from the Museum of Modern Art, working under the auspices of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture with the blessing of its director, Ricardo Alegría.

195 artists from Central and Latin America and the Caribbean participated in the general exhibition.

The Biennial also held two special retrospective exhibits: the prints from 1928 -1944 by Mexican master Orozco, and works by Puerto Rican master printer Lorenzo Homar from 1946 -1969.

The seven members of the international jury were:

-Umbro Apollonio, Director, Historical Archive of Contemporary Art of the Venice Biennial

-Arturo V. Dávila, Director, Department of Fine Arts of the University of Puerto Rico

-Elaine Johnson, Department of Drawings and Prints, Museum of Modern Art, New York

-Walter Koschatsky, Director, Albertina Museum, Vienna

-Zoran Krzisnik, Modern Gallery of Ljubljana, Yugoslavia

-Samuel Paz, Center of Visual Arts, Torcuato di Tella Institute, Buenos Aires

-Chisaburoh Yamada, National Museum of Oriental Art, Tokyo

Each awarded one prize to one artist as follows:

Jesús Rafael Soto for "Sotomagie Núm. 2"  by Umbro Apollonio

Luis E. Camnitzer for "Línea Ausente" by Samuel Paz

Mauricio Lasansky for "Retrato de una Joven Artista" by Walter Koschatsky

Arthur Luis Piza for "La Grande Verte" by Zoran Krzisnik

Liliana Porter for "Arbol" by Chisaburoh Yamada

Omar Rayo for "El Hombre está Ausente" by Arturo V. Dávila

Antonio Seguí for "La Verdura" by Elaine Johnson

The special prize for Puerto Rican artists was awarded by absolute majority to Marcos Yrizarry for "Forma II".

Honorable mentions within this category were given to Jaime Romano and Carlos Irizarry.

The following artists participated in the exhibition but did not compete: 

José  Luis Cuevas, Wilfredo Lam, Julio Leparc, Marisol Escobar,
