INTRODUCTION

After more than a decade of development of that impulse towards the graphic disciplines which was incubated in the Centro de Arte Puertorriqueño, arises to the artistic life of the country the print maker José R.Alicea. Solely a printmaker, not because of an incapacity to express himself effectively in other plastic media, but for a pure vocational and patriotic preference. He knows that in this mother country of confusion that is Puerto Rico, there is an urgent need for clarification and transparency. That is why, by choice and also by temperament, Alicea goes straight to the rigor and cutting clarity of the print. From the time he discovers it, through the lessons of the master Lorenzo Homar, Alicea embraces it devoutly, unaware of the flirtations so in fashion and the complexes that "those who haven't studied abroad" adaptably tend to acquire. José R. Alicea has done all his learning at home.

He began in his city of birth Ponce under the tutelage of Don Miguel Pou. Once transferred to San Juan, he moved to the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture. There he took night classes in carving and modeling with the master Compostela. Later, favored with a modest scholarship from the Department of Labor, Alicea received the first graphic lessons from Lorenzo Homar, becoming later his assistant. Alicea, who is presently 36 years old, occupies the position of Artistic Director of the Coffee Magazine published by the Puerto Rico Cooperative of Coffee Growers.

His prints, serigraphs and posters have participated in collective shows in Puerto Rico, Mexico, New York and Europe. His posters are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of New York. He has won honors in various Christmas Festival Print Contests of the Ateneo Puertorriqueño: Honorable Mention, 1961; First Prize, 1962; First Prize, 1963. The shield of Puerto Rico in the Rotunda of the Capitol building (in San Juan) is his work. His print "El Cuatrista" was recently acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The first triumph, however, of his clear talent, of his proud autonomy, was his recent Exhibit of Prints at the Gallery of the Ateneo (August, 1963). Not many realized the significance of this act. For this first time in the history of our plastic arts, we had an individual exhibit of prints by an artist who, up to now, is solely a printmaker and who has developed his talent without leaving the island limits. Al cabo de más de una década de desarrollo de aquel impulso hacia las disciplinas gráficas que se incubó en el Centro de Arte Puertorriqueño, surge a la vida artística del país el grabador José R. Alicea. Sólo grabador, no por incapacidad para desempeñarse eficazmente en los demás oficios plásticos, sino por pura selección vocativa y patriótica. Sabe que en esta patria de confusiones que es Puerto Rico hay necesidad urgente de clarificaciones y diafanidades. Por eso, por voluntad y también por temperamento, Alicea va derecho hacia el rigor y la claridad tajante del grabado. Desde que lo descubre, a través de las lecciones del maestro Lorenzo Homar, Alicea se entrega devotamente, desentendido de los coqueteos tan en boga y de los complejos que suelen adquirir acomodaticiamente "los que no han estudiado fuera", José R. Alicea ha hecho todo su aprendizaje en casa.

Comenzó en su ciudad natal de Ponce bajo la tutela de don Miguel Pou. Ya trasladado a San Juan se adscribió al Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña. Allí tomó clases noctrnas de talla y modelado con el maestro Compostela. Más tarde, favorecido con una beca modesta del Departamento del Trabajo, Alicea recibió las primeras lecciones gráficas de Lorenzo Homar, para convertirse luego en ayudante de éste. Alicea, quien cuenta al presente 36 años de edad, ocupa el cargo de Director Artístico de la Revista del Café que publica la Cooperativa, Cafeteros de Puerto Rico.

Sus grabados, serigrafías y carteles han participado en muestras colectivas en Puerto Rico, México, Nueva York y Europa. Carteles suyos figuran en la colección del Musco Metropolitano de Nueva York. Ha ganado honores en varios Certamenes de Grabado del Festival de
Navidad del Ateneo Puertorriqueño: Mencion Honorífica, 1961; Primer Premio, 1962; Primer Premio, 1963. Es obra suya el escudo de Puerto Rico que figura en la Rotonda del Capitolio. Su grabado "El Cuatrista" fue adquirido recientemente por el Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York.

El primer triunfo, sin embargo, de su señero talento, de su orgullecida autoctonía, lo proporcionó su reciente Exposición de Grabados en la Galería del Ateneo (agosto 1963). No muchos se percataron de la significación de ese acto. Por primera vez en la historia de nuestras artes plásticas, tuvimos una exposición individual de puros grabados, de un artista que, hasta el momento, es grabador únicamente y que se ha formado sin salir de los límites isleños. Triunfo de Alicea, y de Puerto Rico.
