Born
in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in
1947. Suárez studied at
the Puerto Rico School of Plastic
Arts and the Autonomous University
of Mexico. In 1976, he became
a professor at the School of
Plastic Arts. His work has been
exhibited internationally, in
individual and collective shows,
among them: Latin Excellence,
Xerox Corporation, Rochester,
N.Y.-1976; XVII Sao Paulo Biennial,
Brazil- 1983; Cuenca First Biennial
of Painting, Ecuador-1987, Puerto Rican Painting, Between Past and Present (traveling
exhibition) United States and
Puerto Rico- 1987; First Caribbean
Biennial, Santo Domingo, D.R.-1992; Recent Paintings , Contemporary Art Museum, Panama-1992; Four Puerto Rican Painters (Hernández Cruz, Irizarry, Chiesa and Suárez) Washington and San Juan, Puerto Rico-2000. Suárez
was a resident artist at Turabo
University between 1992 and 1994.
He is the author of two public
art projects: Lost Steps ( Los pasos perdidos ),
a sculptural group located at
Antonia Quiñones Square,
Condado, P.R., which received
an award in the category of public
art from the International Association
of Art Critics, Puerto Rico Chapter,
in 1999; and Historic Monument 2000 ( Monumento histórico 2000 ),
University of Puerto Rico at
Mayagüez. |
